Note to Figure 1Figure 1 plots the ideological constraint measure's interaction across knowledge and voting preference groups. The measure of ideological constraint ranged from -5 to 5, with an average of -.64 and a standard deviation of 2.4, while the measure of issue knowledge ranged from 0 to 5, averaging 2.1 with a standard deviation of 1.5. Cronbach's alpha computed to .24 for individuals whose knowledge scores fell a standard deviation or more below the knowledge measure's average. By contrast, alpha was .41 for those within a standard deviation of the knowledge measure's average and .68 for those within a standard deviation or more above the knowledge measure's average. Self-described evangelicals averaged -0.4 on the ideological constraint measure, a figure significantly different (p <.001) from the -1.2 average among nonevangelicals. On the measure of issue knowledge, evangelicals turned in an average score of 2, significantly lower (p <.001) than the 2.5 average score among nonevangelicals. |
